STEM Student "Happenings"
On April 28th, 18 students from the Macomb and Oakland County area school districts in Michigan participated in a STEM outreach event by visiting Defense Components of Detroit (DCD), a service disabled veteran-owned manufacturing firm located in Auburn Hills, MI. The students, ranging in age from 5 to 16, had the opportunity to see practical application of STEM as they toured the manufacturing facility, and observed first-hand how raw material is transformed into critical components needed for the Defense, Aerospace, Energy and Medical industries.
The students benefitted from dialogue with several DCD employees, ranging from machinist, engineers, quality control specialist, and other technical disciplines whom all highlighted the significance of STEM as it relates to their skill.
Many of the students already have high ambitions of becoming biologists, scientists, and engineers, while others aspire to become soldiers, doctors and nurses. Whatever their calling, perhaps the seeds planted during their visit to DCD will inspire them to excel in whatever discipline they choose.
